Thank you for taking the time to visit. Since this is my first blog post, I’m gonna go ahead and answer some basic questions about Neon Sauce.
Neon Sauce is an independent Malaysian brand that focuses on bringing exclusive kick-ass limited edition prints from a wide variety of Malaysian artists to the rest of the world.
I had wanted to do something like this for some time now. I’ve been a collector of poster art for years and I decided a while back that I no longer wanted to just be a collector but I wanted to produce my own art shows and help showcase local artists.
I had gotten to know quite a few Malaysian artists while producing a series of ‘War Of The Worlds’ comics for Heavy Metal magazine from 2009 to 2012, and had been blown away by level of talent here in Malaysia.
At the same time, I found myself thinking a lot about Malaysian pop culture. What exactly is it? It’s hard to pinpoint because it’s such a mixed bag of influences, borrowing from everywhere, from the U.S to Japan to Korea.
It’s always been in our nature to ‘Malaysianize’ or localise things that interest us, and make it our own. I mean, who doesn’t?And that is basically what Neon Sauce is all about. It’s a chance to collaborate with Malaysian artists to explore and come up with our own vision of what Malaysian pop culture can be – in the form of some very cool limited edition prints.
The idea is for Malaysians to look at this art and go “Yeah, I get it, that’s Malaysia!” but also for the artwork to be strong enough on its own that anyone else can look at it and go “I’m not sure what that is, but I want it!”
So that brings me to NEON SAUCE’s very first series of prints – ‘ARE WE LOST: A SEARCH FOR MALAYSIAN POP CULTURE.
‘ARE WE LOST: A SEARCH FOR MALAYSIAN POP CULTURE’ brings together an eclectic group of some of the most exciting artists in the Malaysian art scene, each one bringing their own unique visual perspective, inspired from everything to our rich history of folklore and urban legends to humorous local and international pop culture mash-up’s to stunningly creative reinventions of iconic Malaysian symbols and past-times.
Featuring new exclusive original artwork from Lefty, Kenji Chai, Michael Chuah (C2V), Katun, Zamzami M. Zain and Sandra Khoo.
NEON SAUCE will be releasing a new series of prints from a different ARE WE LOST artist every month, starting with Lefty’s funny, insightful, and lovingly rendered ‘WELCOME TO TAMAN SRI ANGKASA’ series, which reimagines beloved Star Wars characters as instantly recognisable Malaysian archetypes.
I’m so thrilled to finally be able to make these prints available. It’s been a crazy ride, and it’s just the beginning.
Thank you again for stopping by, and I hope you get a kick out of what we have to offer.
To my fellow Malaysians – MALAYSIA BOLEH!
And to everyone else – SO SAY WE ALL!
Cheers,
Gavin.

Neonsauce offers artwork for sale by a range of artists, and will soon be offering original artwork and prints for sale by the artist Kenji Chai.
All these works were produced for the art show Are We Lost -A Search For Malaysian Pop Culture as curated by Gavin Yap
Kenji’s contributions to the show consisted of beautiful visual collages, in marker and art-line, that captured icons of Malaysia, made up of elements of every day life, such as “Ayam” shown here.
Find out more about Kenji in the coming weeks as we launch his artist page here on the site and start offering his prints for sale.
We are proud to announce that we are now offering prints and original artwork by the artist Lefty from the 2015 art show Are We Lost -A Search For Malaysian Pop Culture for sale here on the site.
Lefty’s artwork for the show beautifully blended together sci-fi imagery with scenes of local every day occurrences here in Malaysia, such as Rempit Trooper (shown on the left)
Find out more about Lefty on his artist page and find his prints and original artwork for sale in the store.
